Essential oils are extremely strong liquids that can be dangerous if not utilized vigilantly.
There are some of the essential oils which provide numbers of benefits but prove to be injurious under certain circumstances. Inappropriate usage of essential oils generally results into destructive and adverse side effects.
Before using any essential oil on the body, one should consult the trained and qualified aromatherapy practitioner or the physician.
If one is suffering with any allergic reaction, immediately stop its usage. Therefore, one should follow these safety guidelines before applying the essential oils and they include:-
- First of all, one should try a little quantity of diluted essential oil on any part of the skin. Then after applying, one should keep it for 24 hours and observe for causing any reaction. If it causes irritation on the skin, then it is not suitable for their skin and should not apply it.
- Certain essential oils should not be applied during pregnancy or should not be used by those people who are suffering from epilepsy, asthma and other health conditions.
- One should only take these oils internally after consulting an experienced and trained aromatherapy practitioner.
- One should not apply undiluted essential oils on the skin. There are various undiluted essential oils available in the market like Lavender essential oil. If these essential oils are applied, it can cause severe sensitivity to some people.
- When one is utilizing the essential oil for the first time, one should make use of little quantities of essential oils only. If one drop works best, then one should not apply it in excess quantities.
- All essential oils are not appropriate in aromatherapy treatments. One should take the advice of the experienced aromatherapy practitioners before using these essential oils such as camphor, wormood, wintergreen, sassafras, pennyroyal, rue, onion and bitter almond.
- All essential oils are considered as flammable; therefore, one should keep them away from the fire hazards.
- One should keep the essential oils away from children or should utilize them in the presence of an adult. There are some of the essential oils which are considered to be safe like citrus essential oil. One should always treat the essential oils like medicines.
- After applying the essential oils, one should not go out in the sun as it can cause sensitivity in the people.
- Always keep the essential oils away from the contact of eyes.
- After applying essential oils, one should always wash their hands.
