History of Shaving

Using razors for shaving is quite old around 10.000 B.C. Even before the invention of razors, human removes hair using two sea shells and pull the hair out.

Early men also used rough tweezers to pluck hairs it was less frequent painful method of shaving.

A different culture is also seen in which men singeing their whiskers (it is a method in which hairs are burned as close to face as possible). But it did not give a clean and effective shave.

Around 3000 BC, when copper tools came into existence, copper razors were used for first time to shave.

It is expected that an approach towards personal hygiene begun at this time. Alexander promoted regular shaving during his time in the 4 th century BC.

Few facts related with Shaving

  • Men has 25,000 hard facial hair which hard enough to be compared with copper wire.
  • The hair grows between 125mm to 150mm per year
  • A man spends an average of 3000 hours or near about 6 months of one’s total age for shaving. 

Egyptians were having a strange passion with personal body hygiene thus they adopt a culture of shaving as a part of daily grooming. Egyptians used to do shave their beard and heads hair so as to save them selves from enemy who snatch their hair with hands to give torture to them.

Shaving spreads all over the world very easily and the person who keep themselves unshaved are known as “barbarians”. For more than hundreds of years straight steel razor of knife shape were used.

Another reason to do shave was to save one from various body infection and diseases. Living at that place was very difficult as it was very hot there.

It was difficult to keep hair clean as no soap or hair products were invented at that time. One can keep baldhead cool and clean instead of shoulder length hairs. Thus it saves Egyptians for several fungal dieses and itching problems.

In the 1400 and 1500’s Englishmen go for clean shaved without beards. Most men were lucky as they bath once a month. In 1461 a contract was granted by Edward IV of England for the society of Barber/Surgeons.

The step was taken to change it into a profession. The trend of shaving remains changing from country to country. It never remains same for two different cultures. Today trend is completely changed and new technology shaving items are available in market.
