AMEOBIASIS
A disease caused by infection of protozoan is known as Ameobiasis. Actually, a disease caused by Entamoeba histolytica. E. histolytica initially infects the intestine and although it reaches the other organs.
Who is at risk for amebiasis?
It is common in people who live in institutions or developing countries that have poor sanitary conditions. Amebiasis is most found in people who have traveled to developing countries that have poor sanitary conditions. Men who have sex with other men can infected by ameobiasis. It can be spread by sexual contact.
How can you become infected by ameobiasis?
- By bringing and touching to your mouth cysts picked up from surfaces that are contaminated with Entamoeba histolytica.
- By putting anything into your mouth that has touched the stool of a person who is infected by ameobiasis.
- By swallowing contaminated food and water with Entamoeba histolytica.
Symptoms of Ameobiasis
The symptoms are including stomach cramping, loose stools, stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, discomfort, abdominal pain and fever. Symptoms take about two to four weeks. Entamoeba histolytica spreads to lungs and brain also. The patient loses stamina and weight.
Diagnosis of Ameobiasis:
It can be difficult for a doctor to diagnose ameobiasis. Your doctor will ask you to submit stool samples and blood test. Other cells and parasites can look similar to E. histolytica. Sometimes people are infected with Entamoeba dispar instead of Entamoeba histolytica. Infection with Entamoeba histolytica makes people sick, but infection with Entomoeba dispar never makes people sick.
Your infection has invaded the wall of the intestine of your body, and then your doctor will ask you for blood test. Blood tests for antibodies to the amebas may be helpful. Bear in mind that minor symptoms can be a sign of ameobiasis and timely diagnosis of ameobiasis by your health care provider could save your life.
Treatment for Ameobiasis:
You will be treated with several antibiotics. Iodoquinol, diloxanide and paromomycin can be used to kill the cysts in the stool.
- Don’t eat fresh vegetables and fruit that you did not peel yourself.
- Don’t eat anything and drink sold by street vendors.
- Drink only boiled water.
- You can make water safe by dissolving iodine tablets in the filtered water.
- Don’t eat cheese or drink milk and dairy products that may not have been pasteurized.
- Wash hands before food and after using the toilet.
Amoebiasis infects in following ways:-
From cysts
- Taking contaminated fruits and vegetables.
- Taking non-veg foods
- Taking contaminated drinks and foods.
As with trophozoites
- From human carriers directly to others through sharing towels, food contamination etc.
- From pets
- Poor sanitation and unhygienic conditions.
