Skin cancer is a disease of cells in which abnormal growth of malignant cells found in the epidermis.
The skin has two types of layers such as top layer and lower layer.
There are different kinds of cells in your skin such as squamous cells, melanocytes and basal cells.
Skin cancer develops when abnormal cells grow rapidly and divide uncontrollably.
It is commonly occur in people who have fair skin, red hair, burn when exposed to the sunrays or eyes in light color and history of melanoma.
It can develop on the foot, inside the mouth, underneath nails and genitals area.
Types of skin cancer:
- Basal cell carcinoma
- Squamous cell carcinoma
- Melanoma
- Mycosis fungoides
- Cutaneous T-Cell Lymphoma
- Kaposi’s sarcoma
Basal cell carcinoma:
The most common type of skin cancer develops in the lower layers of the skin. It is commonly occur in patient with fair skin and light eyes. It can occur on the face, hands, ears, scalp, neck and arms. It is also occur on the skin area which is more expose to sun rays.
Main sign of this disease is change in the color of the skin. There are small lump also develop, they can be red in color, shiny, smooth and look like waxy. If you are watching some changes in your skin, you should go to your health care provider as soon as possible.
Melanoma:
Melanoma is a type of skin cancer in which cancer cells are develop in the top layer of the skin that give melanocytes cells. It commonly develops in adults, but sometimes adolescents and children are also affected. It is also known as cutaneous melanoma.
It can easily transmit to other parts of the body through blood. If a patient who has change in color, size or shape of a mole, bleeding from a mole or a mole that experience swollen, hard or itchy, go to the doctor immediately. It can occur on the head, trunk or neck of the men and women are affected this disease on the legs or arms.
Squamous cell carcinoma:
It is also a type of skin cancer in which cancer develops in the squamous cells on the epidermis. It can develop in middle- aged people and a person who has exposure to the sun for a long period.
It can occur inside of the mouth, face or genital area. In this disease scaly lesions are develop, they are in red, brown, black, yellow or skin color.
Other nonmelanoma skin cancers:
Other skin cancers include Mycosis fungoides, Cutaneous T-Cell Lymphoma, Kaposi’s sarcoma and Paget’s disease. They are found less than 1% cases.
Causes of skin cancers:
The main cause of skin cancer is exposure to sunrays for a long period. Skin rays such as UVA or UVB both are damages the skin. Family history of melanoma also includes causes of skin cancer.
Diagnosis of skin cancer:
Dermatologist performs a biopsy to diagnose skin cancer. He will remove the skin lesions and examine it under the microscope. There are different type of biopsy perform by dermatologist, these biopsy are depends on the different kind of skin cancer.
Incisional biopsy is performed when a patient has enlarged skin lesions. Dermatologists should be trained in this technique.
Prevention:
- One should minimize stay out the sunrays between 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- One should use sunscreen with SPF- 15 regularly.
- One should wear clothes such as broad hat, long skirts, long sleeves shirt.
- One should wear sunglasses when go to outside.
