Antipsychotic Drugs Found Responsible for Rapid Weight Gain, Abnormal Eating
The antipsychotic drugs can cause the development of obesity. Mostly the drugs used for the treatment of the schizophrenia are more likely to cause the rapid and excessive weight gain.
The recent study that was published in the general called “proceedings of the national academy of sciences” discovered the reason behind these side e effects of the drugs.
The study points out that these drugs are responsible for the development of the enzyme AMPK. This enzyme is developed in the parts brains and regulate the behavior of eating.
The patients who are in the regular habit of taking the drugs like clozapine and olanzapine are likely to get the rapid weight gain. In some instances the weight gain is so rapid that the patient reaches on the high risk of obesity and the risk of other obesity related diseases like the diabetes and the cardiovascular diseases.
According to the study these drugs can cause gain in the weight up to 22 pound in the one year after starting their consumption.
The general quick effect of these drugs is found in the form of increased appetite. The patient taking these drugs start eating too much because of the increased appetite. It results in the formation of obesity and other related diseases.
The results of this study are mainly based on the experiments performed on the mice. The study made it clear that the antipsychotic drugs cause hampering in the protein known as histamine.
It is an important factor that is responsible for the local immune reactions mostly the allergy symptoms. These proteins have been considered for a long time as a key agent in controlling the weight.
The researchers expect that the latest study will make it possible to develop the antipsychotic drugs that will not cause the side effect of weight gain.
Zyprexa which is up to now considered as a best therapeutic drug is also found responsible for the development of the obesity. Now scientists are paying their full attention on developing the drug that will not cause the side effects of the obesity and will effective against the condition of schizophrenia.
The findings of the study are very important and it is expected to bring some new effective drugs for the treatment of the schizophrenia without causing any side effect. It is still in the experimental stages and some more exiting results are expected in the future.
